Sananda R vs. Smaraki,Mohanty - Asian Amateur Rapid Women 2024 1/2-1/2

In the Asian Amateur Rapid Women's Chess tournament on December 15, 2024, Sananda R made a move with their white pieces, playing e3 against Smaraki Mohanty's black pieces. This move allowed Black to control the center of the board while developing one of their key pieces. Unfortunately for Black, this move also ignored a stronger threat from White's pawn on d4 and chose not to challenge it immediately. Despite the lack of immediate material gain, e3 did pose a threat to Black's piece by forcing Smaraki Mohanty to respond with a move that would allow her to develop and potentially attack another part of the board. Meanwhile, Sananda R took advantage of this development to set up their own pawn on e3 for active play. As it turned out, playing e3 did not lead to an equal piece trade as had been hoped by Smaraki Mohanty. On the contrary, the move helped White gain a strategic advantage by keeping their pieces well-developed and protected. The real value of e3 lay in its ability to push Black's hand in responding with a specific move that would reveal their own attacking intentions and ultimately allow Sananda R to force her opponent's piece into an unfavorable position.
