Lohia,Sohum vs. Putnam,Liam - Charlotte CC Fall GM-Open 2024 0-1
In the Charlotte CC Fall GM-Open 2024 tournament on November 24th, White player Sohum Lohia made a move that will be remembered as Rg7. This move came at a cost as it missed the opportunity to launch a direct attack on Black's position. By playing this move, Lohia failed to reveal any signs of an impending threat, allowing Black player Liam Putnam to remain unaware of the danger lurking nearby. Furthermore, Rg7 also missed the chance to escape an attack that had been building up, leaving Lohia with no clear path forward. Additionally, by defending Lf8, the knight is now well protected from any potential threats, a move that might have come at the expense of better protection for another piece that was underdefended. Despite this, Rg7 does serve as a blocking pawn, preventing Black's counterattack. However, it also means that Lohia missed the chance to protect the underdefended piece and instead focused on developing his own piece for active play.
