Bilych,Oleksii vs. Bok,Benjamin - US Masters 2024 0-1

In the US Masters 2024 event on November 30th, White player Bilych made a questionable move by playing Qg7+. This move seems to have missed an opportunity to launch a strong attack, instead ignoring a potential free capture that could have put pressure on Black's position. By not revealing its attacking intentions earlier, the Queen's move also failed to create a sense of urgency and uncertainty among Black's pieces. Furthermore, it forced the opponent to respond to the Queen's presence, which might have led to a loss of mobility for White's bishop, as it was left with less flexibility to maneuver. The Qg7+ move also failed to secure better protection for the underdefended piece on the board, leaving it vulnerable to potential attacks. However, it did manage to gain some tempo advantage by developing its Queen, which might have provided a slight temporary benefit. Unfortunately, this advantage came at the cost of missing out on more significant defensive opportunities, particularly in terms of protecting Black's attacked piece. Notably, the Qg7+ move does not seem to be attempting to block an opponent's attack, nor did it aim to create a fork that would attack multiple pieces. It neither developed its Queen for active play nor protected an unprotected piece. Instead, it appears to have been a more passive maneuver that simply placed the Queen on g7, potentially setting up future attacks rather than immediately resolving any threats.
